The RPK (Ruchnoy Pulemyot Kalashnikova, "Kalashnikov hand-held machine gun") is a 7.62 mm light machine gun of Soviet build, developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the late 1950s. It was created as part of a program to standardize the small arms inventory of the Soviet Army; it replaced the 7.62 mm RPD light machine gun. Presently the RPK is used by the armed forces of former Soviet Union countries and certain African and Asian nations.
