The StG 44 (Sturmgewehr 44 or "assault rifle model 1944") was an German assault rifle developed during World War II. The name was used for propaganda reasons; it literally means storm rifle i.e. "to storm enemy positions". It is also known under the designations MP43 and MP44. the StG44 is considered to be the inspiration behind the AK-47.
